Snowflake Marketplace is a channel where the product you distribute is shared access to data, a native application or an AI service inside the consumer’s own Snowflake account — not software they download and deploy. That single fact changes the listing model, the transaction model, and how the marketplace fits alongside AWS, Microsoft and Google Cloud.


A data or AI product lead evaluating Snowflake Marketplace usually starts from the wrong analogy. They know how a hyperscaler marketplace works — you list a SaaS or container product, a buyer subscribes, the buyer deploys or provisions it — and they assume Snowflake is the same motion pointed at data buyers.

It is not. On Snowflake the thing you sell never leaves your account, and the thing the buyer receives never lands in theirs as a copy. The unit of distribution is a share. Get that right and the rest of the model — pricing, payout, eligibility — follows cleanly. Get it wrong and you will scope the integration as a deployment that does not exist.

Here is how the channel actually works, and where it belongs in a multi-marketplace plan.


What is Snowflake Marketplace?

Snowflake Marketplace is a distribution channel where providers publish listings that give consumers access to data products, Snowflake Native Apps and AI services without moving or copying the underlying data. Snowflake’s own definition is precise: “A listing is an enhanced method of Secure Data Sharing and uses the same provider and consumer model.” The provider shares from their account; the consumer queries it in place, inside their own Snowflake environment.

That is the whole difference in one sentence. A hyperscaler marketplace transaction ends with the buyer running something. A Snowflake Marketplace transaction ends with the buyer querying something you still own and control. No extract, no transfer, no downstream pipeline to maintain — the consumer sees your dataset or app as if it were a table in their account, and it updates when you update it.

Three kinds of product fit this model:

  • Data products — a dataset or a set of views a consumer subscribes to and queries directly.
  • Snowflake Native Apps — an application that installs and runs inside the consumer’s account, so their data never leaves it either.
  • AI and enrichment services — increasingly delivered as native apps or functions that score, enrich or embed a consumer’s own data in place.

If your product only makes sense as an installed binary a customer runs on their own infrastructure, Snowflake is the wrong channel. If it makes sense as data a customer joins against their own tables, or a model that runs where the data already sits, it is close to a perfect one.


How does the Snowflake provider-listing model work?

The provider-listing model has two gates: permission to publish, and permission to charge. You clear the publish gate with account setup, and the charge gate with a monetization review and a payout account. They are separate steps, and teams that conflate them lose a sprint discovering that a live listing still cannot take money.

To publish at all, Snowflake requires a full account — trial accounts “can share data with specified consumers, but not on the Snowflake Marketplace” — plus the ACCOUNTADMIN role or a custom role with provider privileges, and acceptance of the Snowflake Provider and Consumer Terms.

To charge, you need three more things. A provider profile, which is your published vendor identity and is required before a paid or marketplace listing can go out. A Stripe account, because Snowflake’s payout for card-based purchases runs through Stripe. And monetization approval — paid listings on the Marketplace are gated to qualified partners, so you engage your Snowflake partner contact to validate go-to-market readiness before a paid listing is submitted.

How does the Snowflake Marketplace transaction model work?

The transaction model pairs a usage-based or subscription pricing plan with one of two payment paths, and the payment path depends on how the consumer chooses to pay. The pricing plan decides what the consumer owes; the payment method decides who pays you.

On pricing, Snowflake documents two families for paid listings. Usage-based plans bill “in arrears in months where usage occurs” and can be structured per-query (“a fixed price for each query run that accesses paid data”), as a monthly fee for any month with qualifying usage, or — for applications — as Custom Event Billing that charges for specific usage types such as modified rows or procedure calls. Subscription plans charge for a specified term with optional recurring billing, so the consumer commits up front rather than paying as they go.

On payment, there are two paths, and this is the part that has no hyperscaler equivalent: “After receiving payment from consumers, Stripe pays providers. If consumers use their Capacity commitment to purchase listings, Snowflake pays providers.” A consumer paying by card routes through Stripe to you. A consumer drawing down their existing Snowflake capacity commitment routes through Snowflake to you. The second path is the strategically interesting one — it lets a buyer spend committed Snowflake budget on your product, the same committed-spend dynamic that makes the hyperscaler marketplaces work, applied to a data cloud.

One rule catches teams late: trials are required for listings offered publicly on the Marketplace. A public paid listing without a trial path is not a complete listing.


How is Snowflake Marketplace different from the hyperscaler marketplaces?

Snowflake differs from AWS, Microsoft and Google Cloud on the one axis that matters most: what changes hands. On a hyperscaler marketplace the buyer receives software to run; on Snowflake the buyer receives access to data or an app that runs where the data already lives. Everything else — the packaging, the integration, the support model — descends from that.

The practical consequence for a product lead: the engineering work to list on Snowflake is not a port of your hyperscaler listing. It is a different packaging exercise — turning your product into a share or a native app — that a container-based marketplace listing does not prepare you for. Budget it as new work, not a copy. Where does Snowflake fit in a multi-marketplace GTM?

Snowflake belongs in a multi-marketplace GTM wherever your buyers already keep their data and their committed Snowflake spend — which is often a different set of buyers than the ones committed on a hyperscaler. The sequencing question is not “which marketplace is biggest,” it is “where has this customer already committed budget my product can draw down.” A data or AI product that enriches Snowflake-resident data belongs on Snowflake first, regardless of where else you sell.

That does not make Snowflake a replacement for the hyperscaler marketplaces; it makes it an additional surface for a specific buyer. Many data and AI vendors end up on both — the hyperscaler listing captures the buyer provisioning infrastructure, and the Snowflake listing captures the analytics or AI team spending Snowflake credits. The two rarely cannibalize each other because they are billed against different commitments.

The operational trap is running each marketplace as its own project with its own console, its own catalogue and its own reconciliation.
