On Alibaba Cloud Marketplace, a private offer and a Promotion Center discount are two different commercial tools: a private offer is a custom-priced, unpaid order pushed to one named customer, while a Promotion Center discount is a percentage markdown on a listing that can apply to everyone or to one buyer.
If you sell on Alibaba Cloud Marketplace and a buyer asks for a better price, you have two levers — and they are not interchangeable. Reach for the wrong one and you either can’t express the deal you agreed to, or you publish a discount far wider than you meant. The two tools split cleanly once you know what each is built for. Here is the distinction, and how a deal desk chooses.
Private offer vs Promotion Center: what’s the difference?
A private offer is a customized, unpaid order a seller creates and pushes directly to a specific customer; the customer reviews it in their console and completes payment on their own schedule. A Promotion Center discount is a percentage markdown a seller sets on a listing, applied either to all buyers or to one buyer by user ID.
The clearest way to keep them apart: a private offer is a deal aimed at one customer at a custom price; a Promotion Center entry is a discount on your listing’s public price. One is a negotiated instrument, the other is a price adjustment. Everything below follows from that.
When to use a private offer
Use a private offer when the commercial terms are specific to one customer — a negotiated price, a fixed-amount discount, or a contract you want attached. The seller creates the offer in the Seller Portal and pushes it as an unpaid order to a named customer.
Two prerequisites catch sellers out:
- You need the customer’s main UID — the customer’s root-account UID. A RAM user’s UID is not accepted; only the root account UID works.
- The product has to invite it. You first publish a Service or SaaS product with the “Contact Sales” button enabled, then create and submit the offer against it.
There is no separate “accept” button: submitting the offer generates an unpaid order in the customer’s account, and payment is the acceptance. An unpaid order is automatically canceled if the customer does not pay within seven days, so a private offer is not a quote that lingers — it is a live order with a clock on it. You can attach a contract file (PDF or Word, up to 10 MB) if the deal needs paperwork alongside it.
When to use Promotion Center
Use Promotion Center when you want to discount a listing’s price rather than construct a one-off deal. It is a discount tool in the Seller Portal that lets you set a percentage off — from 1% to 99%, in whole integers — and apply it either to all buyers or to a specific buyer by user ID.
The hard constraint is the one to remember: Promotion Center does percentages only. If the deal you agreed to is a fixed-amount discount — “$5,000 off,” not “15% off” — Promotion Center can’t express it, and Alibaba’s own guidance is to use a private offer instead. So the shape of the discount, not just its size, decides the tool.
How a deal desk chooses
The decision comes down to three questions:
| Question | Private offer | Promotion Center |
|---|---|---|
| One named customer, or your listing broadly? | One customer (needs their root UID) | All buyers, or one buyer by ID |
| Percentage or fixed amount? | Either (including fixed amount) | Percentage only (1%–99%) |
| A custom-priced order and optional contract? | Yes — generates a specific unpaid order | No — adjusts the listing price |
In short: percentage off a listing, to everyone or one buyer → Promotion Center. A custom-priced deal, a fixed-amount discount, or a contract for one named customer → private offer. Both are Seller Portal features, so the choice is about the deal, not the tooling.

How Suger helps
Every marketplace has its own version of this split — a private-offer construct here, a discount or promotion mechanism there, each with its own prerequisites. Suger runs private offers and marketplace operations across the marketplaces it supports, including Alibaba Cloud, so a deal desk applies one process to “how do we price this deal” instead of relearning each console. The negotiated deal and its terms land in the CRM your team already uses, rather than in a portal someone has to remember to check.
Frequently asked questions
What is an Alibaba Cloud Marketplace private offer? It is a customized, unpaid order a seller creates in the Seller Portal and pushes to a specific customer. The customer reviews it in their console and completes payment, which acts as acceptance. It requires the customer’s root-account UID.
What is the Promotion Center on Alibaba Cloud Marketplace? Promotion Center is a Seller Portal tool for setting percentage discounts — 1% to 99%, integers only — on a listing. The discount can apply to all buyers or to a specific buyer by user ID. It does not support fixed-amount discounts.
Can Promotion Center do a fixed-amount discount? No. Promotion Center is percentage-only. For a fixed-amount discount, Alibaba’s guidance is to use a private offer instead, which can carry a custom price rather than a percentage off the listing.
How does a buyer accept an Alibaba Cloud private offer? There is no separate accept step. Submitting the offer generates an unpaid order in the customer’s account; the customer completes payment on their schedule, and payment is the acceptance. An unpaid order auto-cancels if it goes unpaid for seven days.
What do I need before creating a private offer? A Seller Portal account with permission to create and publish products, the customer’s root-account (main) UID — not a RAM user UID — and a published Service or SaaS product with the “Contact Sales” button enabled to create the offer against.
Takeaways
- A private offer is a custom-priced, unpaid order pushed to one named customer; a Promotion Center discount is a percentage markdown on a listing. Match the tool to the deal shape.
- Promotion Center is percentage-only (1%–99%). For a fixed-amount discount, use a private offer.
- A private offer needs the customer’s root-account UID (not a RAM user) and a “Contact Sales”-enabled product; its unpaid order auto-cancels after seven days.
- Running Alibaba Cloud alongside other marketplaces? Keep one deal-desk process rather than one per console.
